Jommel Macabagdal, CEO and founder of MAC Management, shared his discussions with several industry leaders about “How many percent of what you learned in school did you apply at work?”. A Project Executive of a big technology search engine company answered him, ‘I learn how to learn’ while Jommel responded ‘I learn how to solve’. They went to have a long discussion about ‘Learning’.
Learning does not stop upon graduating, nor is it limited to the program or course you studied for the past 4 or 5 years in college. Most will say that real learning comes after leaving the four walls of your classroom. This article under Project Life discusses the importance and application of Continuous Learning, under the lens of MAC Management’s founder, Jommel Macabagdal.
Jommel graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering specializing in Construction and Technology Management from De La Salle University. After graduation, he pursued a career as a Project Manager, a profession that is directly and closely related to the program he pursued. People often assume that once you pursue a career that is synonymous to the program you studied in college, 90% of what you have learned will be applied. Precisely because the purpose of the degree you have is for you to pursue that career.
He shared two key learnings from his program that he appreciated the most:
Problem-Solving
Communication, Collaboration, and Leadership
As mentioned, real learning comes after attaining your degree— then comes the idea of being a life-long learner. Thus, listed below are ways for you to become a life-long learner.
Learning is an Investment— to yourself.
You are your biggest asset.
Practice, habituation, and repetition build character. Make learning a part of your culture
Make learning a habit and build a great routine. The secret to life is acquiring as much skills and hobbies as you can— may it be in sports, arts, or the academe. Learn to maximize your resources— you can learn so many things through YouTube and Google!
Study yourself!
Be curious about your strengths and how it can help you to excel while understanding your weaknesses and knowing how you can improve.
Take a breath, and debrief
Always take ‘Key takeaways’ from your learning and see how you can apply them in your work or personal life. Be the person who not only uses learning as knowledge but applies it to progress in life.
Always remember: Progress over Perfection
